These days, tech connects us. But food always has–now in new ways via fantastic online systems, web extras and apps…

For our upcoming quarterly event near the Union Square Farmer’s Market, NYCultural Tech features speakers from innovative FarmersWeb and GoodEggs, who will inspire us with software that is at the cusp of a major revolution in the local-food movement.

Have you read the new book by BlueHill chef/farmer Dan Barber? Just released last month, The Third Plate, helps to redirect the local-food movement in a more sustainable way. It encourages cuisine made from available food from nearby mid-sized farms, instead of cherry-picked and out-of-season ingredients for set recipes that is the norm.

Columbia Report on Green Food Carts

Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs has released a study on New York City’s Green Cart Initiative on June 16, 2014.

According to the press release, “Researchers found that that the City’s Green Cart initiative creates economically viable small business opportunities for immigrant entrepreneurs, and recognizes the important role of philanthropy in promoting and supporting innovative public policy. New York City’s Green Cart initiative has increased access to healthy food in otherwise underserved high-density and low-income neighborhoods, influenced customers’ consumption of fruits and vegetables, and created jobs for immigrant entrepreneurs, according to researchers at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). The researchers suggest the program can and should be replicated in urban areas across the country.”

Produce carts, in combination with green markets and locally organized community gardens go along way toward expanding food justice and education on healthy eating in NYC’s under served neighborhoods.

Come join us at West 104th Street between Central Park West and Manhattan Avenue or at one of the many garden venues and Make Music NY!
